Come Home 'Round Midnite

When I first started dancing, it was just taking a ballet class to help rehabilitate my knee from a judo injury. I had no idea I'd fall in love with it. Within a year, I'd become an apprentice with the resident company--The Valois Company of Dancers (named after our founder, Elaine Valois). After she retired, we kept the name for 2 years, then changed the name to Real People Moving. This was our first full concert as RPM, and it was an incredible experience. To dance with my friends was a joy and a privelege.
Even before I started dancing for the Lord, my choreography sometimes tried to address social issues (see "Steps", "Strange Fruit", "The Color of Hate", etc.). This piece touches on alcoholism, domestic violence, adultery/infidelity & friendship. Although there are a few comedic moments, the program notes bemoaned the situation portrayed, and it's my hope that all viewers will be saddened at the fact that the lead female character returned to her abuser...and probably had done so in the past & most likely would do so in the future.

Dancers (in order of appearance): Marjorie Smyser, Marvin Johnson, Miriam Wagoner, Ellen Finkler, Rebecca Withnell.
Music: "Come Home" and "'Round Midnight", by New York Voices, from their self-titled album.
Choreography: Marvin D. Johnson

As the average Jane Q. Public watching this, I felt it was a wonderful job and didn't miss a beat. On the subject matter, I just sit here wishing I knew an effective way to open womens eyes to the abuse and that it is not their "fate" in life to continue to go through it. I feel rather melancholy about this subject as I have tried to help so many friends and aquaintences living in these situations. They may leave for a time but inevitably go back to the abuser or on to yet another abuser.

I loved the part where the girlfriends are circling the man and dumping the booze on him. I think any woman can see her girlfriends doing that for her if they thought her man was no good. This is very beautifully done...sad and lovely and so true.

Thanks for your comments. Yeah, it's sad that we can sometimes find beauty in pain. Sad, but perhaps that's the only thing that actually makes it survivable. There were actually supposed to be 3 friends, but one sprained her ankle a few days before the show. So, a lot of the "friends' apartment" choreography suffered, and couldn't be quite as intense as I'd wanted.

The scene you liked was actually a nightmare sequence, where he imagines the woman coming to his rescue. Then, when he wakes up, guess who walks in the door.

Thank you for your kind, insightful comment. You just altered my unjustified stereotype of young "skaters". (*^_^*) Just kidding. God Bless You, Brother.
Sincerely,
