| I am a Christian, and in formation for the Catholic Priesthood, but my background was in science. The notion of Creationism jars as much with me (and my fellow Catholics) as it does with any atheist scientist. The worst harm that it does is that it builds the faith of uneducated people on dubious science, such that upon learning the truth, instead of seeing the beauty and complexity of God's creation, they see that their 'faith' has been built, not on solid rock, but on sand. |

| The call of the Christian is to seek the truth. We should have nothing to fear from science, as the call of science is also to seek the truth. If we find ourselves at odds with science, as has happened throughout history, and continues to happen even today (Creationism etc.) then, assuming the science to be rigorous, we need to examine whether we have adequately understood the implications of the science. Does accepting evolution truly discard Salvation History? I hope not - I have. |

Errata:
1. I apologise, this is just completely wrong. It was thought up until 1965 that Mercury was tidally locked to the Sun, but was proven to have 3:2 spin orbit resonance. That means for every 2 years on Mercury, there are 3 days. One Mercurian year is about 88 Terran days and one Mercurian day about 59 Terran days. I think I was once told that Mercury *was* thought to be tidally locked with the Sun, and confused that to mean it was the current consesus. Again, sorry!
