| "I hope you're being deliberately obtuse." It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it. Usually that somebody is me. THIS time, however, I am not being obtuse at all, I'm being sarcastic. A race bike is a bike built for racing. Fixed gear track bikes are race bikes. So are fixed gear road racing bikes (all there was before 1938. Brit Beryl Burton never stopped using them). A multi-gear derailer bike (I'm with ya Sheldon RIP) might be a race bike, or it might be a Sunday go to market bike. |

Of course you can race any type of bike, but racers are still racers because of their association with professional sport. Drop bars say Racer to me, whether it's used for that is a different matter. |

| Um, fixed means without a freewheel. The movement of the tire to the movement of the crank are connected (fixed). A fixed bike doesn't have to have brakes, but it's still "fixed" with brakes attached. And Stubot - before the freewheel all bikes were fixed. They rode those on the road... |
