Only 4 million out ... ( 9 months ago by BidhoEritrean)
Only 4 million out of 80 million Ethiopians speak Tigrinya. They are a very small minority in Ethiopia. Plus all of them live in the border with Eritrea a region called Tigray. So claiming that all Ethiopians speak Tigrinya is stupid.

kenyaqueen1, we ... ( 9 months ago by dahlakislands)
kenyaqueen1, we don't speak the same language as ethiopians in general. working languges in eritrea are tigrigna, arabic and tigre . the only offical language in ethiopia is amharic.
eritrea and ethiopia only share two tribes, afar and tigrigna. eris and ethios might look similar just like how all east africans look similar but they are two different people in reality.
Miss Dahlak, I ... ( 9 months ago by squeky11)
Miss Dahlak, I strongly disagree with u. The notion of Tigrinya & Tegaru being one ethnic group is no different than, say, the Saho & Afars' case. Both practice one dominant religion, both have nearly identical cultures & both can speak & understand one another's language (with heavy dialects of course), yet Sahos & Afars are considered different ethnic groups. The case between Tigrinya & Tegarus is no different, they maybe similar but certainly not the same ethnic group.
Actually, there are ... ( 9 months ago by squeky11)
Actually, there are more than 9 ethnic groups in Eritrea
Elite: A Semitic speaking ethnic group that has been cultrally influenced by Tigres. Idris Awate (father of modern Eritrea) is ethnically Elite.
Dahlik: This Arab ethnic group speaks a Semitic language that's very close to Tigre & Tigrinya. The Dahlik live on the Dahlak Islands & have been around for centuries.
Hausa: This Nigerian ethnic group migrated from Nigeria to Eritrea in the early 20s. Today, many Hausa speak Nara & Tigre

Squeky11, i was talking in general and wasn't really aiming for fine detailed comment. but yes tegaru and tigrigna have many differences. there are many cultural aspects practiced in tigray and certainly never heard of or practicsed in eritrea. the grammar and pronunciation also grately varies.i personally struggle to understand tigray's tigrigna.
well the official ... ( 9 months ago by dahlakislands)
well the official eritrean ethnic groups are 9and will probablly remain 9.i know there are small tribes with in tigre, but at the end of the day they speak one language (slight varience),have one religion and are one people.
the dahlak ethnics, are u talking about rashyida ??? as i'm lost!!!!
the "hausa" or "nigerian", i've never heard of them. can i see some sources???????

correction :"i know there are small tribes with in tigre, but at the end of the day they speak one language (slight varience),have one religion and are one people."
should be read as
.....they speak one language (slight varience),have one MAJOR religion and are one people.

Elite don't speak ... ( 9 months ago by squeky11)
Elite don't speak Tigre, they speak Elite. Their culture has been heavily influnced by Tigres.
Dahlik & Rashaida are both Arabs but the similarity ends there. The Dahlik speak a language that sounds almost exactly like Tigre & Tigrinya, called Dahliik, while Rashaida speak Arabic.
Hausa are the latest ethnic group in Eritrea, most of them have adopted the Nara culture & language.
I get my sources from Eritrean history books, but I will try to find links for u to my claims.

I had always thought of the Hausa as a more westerly people of the Sahel. But they were, historically a very aggressive warrior people, so it is not surprising the would span the continent.
