Of all the ... ( 3 months ago by humanman65)
Of all the fruitless searches... Mystery in life is not equal to the discoveries made on behalf of the history of survival within the narrow band on this planet that humans have actually existed. Mystery is not a necessity of survival. Praying to know accomplishes nothing, knowing how to learn accomplishes knowing. How frigg'n heady is that! :-)

The thing that gets me... Hitchens admits here (as he has elsewhere) that he will stop short of stating that there is no God, because he can't prove the position (which is quite right). However, doesn't this make him more agnostic than atheist?

I think it's a semantical arguement.I don't believe there is a god but I'm not an atheist.I also don't believe in talking trees but would you call me an anti-arborial linguist?
you wouldnt call ... ( 3 months ago by foreveringreen)
you wouldnt call youself an atheist, why? the definition of atheist is a person who disbelievesthe existance god. if you disbelieve in god your an atheist. you may not call yourself one but you are. but I may see what you're saying. the word atheist has a negative connotation, as a opposed to "a person who denies the existance of god", so you may not want to associate. i could be totally off, so tell me. and for the record, an anti-arborial linguist would be a linguist who is against trees.

Because there isn't a god to NOT believe in.I would be called...whatever a person living in a B.C. world would be called. You see they haven't had the knowledge of a god yet.
I don't see the ... ( 3 months ago by foreveringreen)
I don't see the problem in being called a word that's definition is a "denier of something's existence" when that something doesn't exist. It's almost a compliment to be called a name that means "disbeliever", when what you disbelieve isn't real. You're arguing that you prefer to be called the equivilent of, "a denier of a thing's existence in which the thing does not exist", but that's so redundant it's unnecessary.
The problem becomes ... ( 3 months ago by toecutterr6)
The problem becomes that people want to marginalize your existance into a category..any category. If you're an atheist well then people like Al Sharpton will identify you with whatever negative connotation exists about being an atheist,(He states,"atheists of the world have killed and hurt people too, they're not absolved of guilt").I refuse to be judged in any 'ist' or 'ism' category,if it doesn't make sense for a fiddler crab or a hawk then it doesn't make sense for me as well.

"People are just generally fed up with being lectured by clerical bullies - I've had enough of it" - Christopher Hitches ... yeah, that about sums up my viewpoint on what's happened to the Republican party, and how they've been taken over by Christian Evangelicals -- no longer the party of small government, constitution and states rights, and I'm glad the elections bear out this point ...
"and how they've ... ( 2 months ago by PiroNiro)
"and how they've been taken over by Christian Evangelicals" If they want to inject their beliefs into public policy... we need to marginalize these people, just like the creationists.
First, dunno who ... ( 2 months ago by AvangionQ)
First, dunno who marked this as spam -- its not. Second, I think you have your terms mixed up -- atheist just means a lack of belief in any deity or supernatural cause. I'd posit that there is no god because there is no statistically significant evidence, no proof to support the claim that there is a god, and without such I have no need for belief in what cannot be proven. There are millions of similar things I can just as equally discount. Hence, I am an atheist.
There is evidences ... ( 2 months ago by miket1m)
There is evidences for God's existence such as fulfilled biblical prophecy, Jesus' resurrection, the Transcendental Argument, the entropy problem, etc. But there is another problem for atheists. Refuting evidences for Gods existence does not prove atheism true anymore than refuting an eyewitness testimony of a marriage denies the reality of the marriage. There is no proof whatsoever to support atheism and the position is far from logical.
Precisely. ... ( 2 months ago by Hottides)
Precisely. Progressive politics and religious moderation have mainly advanced by marginalizing and effectively muting and disenfranchising rigid literalists and extremists, as opposed to physically destroying them. As Sam Harris has essentially stated, Atheism too will thus progress, as the untested propositions and ignorant superstitions defended by religionists are rendered unpalatable and banished to the periphery of conversation and thought through education and rational persuasion.

Lots of religions ... ( 1 month ago by NwZ2)
Lots of religions have "fulfilled" prophecies. Saying "Yours is worse than mine" or saying "yours are wrong and mine are right" don't count. Try again. When you can tell us why you disbelieve those religions and believe yours, you'll understand why we don't believe in yours as well. BTw you cannot prove nor disprove things of a supernatural nature. You're also wrong on that point. "Atheism" isn't something to be "true" about. It's a lack of belief. Your ignorance is stifling.
Lack of belief. The ... ( 1 month ago by miket1m)
Lack of belief. The lack of belief defense of atheists is not logical. It ignores the reality that people categorize concepts anywhere in the range of total acceptance to total rejection. It is our nature to do this. We don't do nothing with information.

I just find religion terribly silly. For as long as I can remember I always thought of it as somewhat of a joke. I am not sure where that came from, but there it is. All religions, regardless of how full of love they claim to be, end up killing someone because they happen to not believe or, more than likely, have some slightly different religious belief.
