Here is the 1979 Special Edition Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am that Restore a Muscle Car restored in 2006 for Craig Blake. It was featured in High Performance Pontiacs June 2007 issue. Took 1st Place in the 2007 Trans Am Nationals SE Modified Class & 1st Place at World of Wheels in Omaha, NE. Enjoy!

Smokey And The Bandit II was a 1980 model because it was a turbo Trans AM which were not available until 1980.

It's probably an Oldsmobile engine, like an Olds 455. Some Trans Ams of that era came with the Olds 403 from the factory. Olds V8s are quite popular in this application.

Oh my good gracious is that one sleeper of a car. You would never know unless he pulled beside you at the light or fired the motor with you around. Excellent route to take with the frame off restoration by putting that motor in there. The camshaft is a bit rough for my taste. The Year One Bandit Edition 18 inch honeycomb rims would fit that car wonderfully.

she's a beauty. great job. daughter totalled my first T/A. car was so solid in front she walked away without a scratch. when i saw the car it broke my heart. then i leaned over the fender to look thru the windshield and the little air scoop over the wheel well fell off. like she was saying to me...."see i took good care of your baby just like did for me." i took that part, put my daughter's baby pic inside it and hung it on the wall. Long live Sparky. Long Live the glorious T/A!

All 79 Factory Automatic Trans Ams had 403 Olds motors in them, because of Pontiac running out of Pontiac 400 engines starting in late 77 into 78.

Some of the late 79 production cars received the round turn signal holes in the dash bezel, as they ran out of the triangle version and started an early release of the 80 dash bezel version. Thanks

....403's had crappy main bearing girdles even the '77 'webbed' blocks. Strong diesel 350 cranks do you no good when your 2 bolt main gives cause you spin the motor past 5,500r's....Too bad nobody makes an aftermarket 403 block cause its a sick small block except for mains, oiling, valvtrain...money can fix all the shortcomings of a 403 build(I used to run one in my '85 442!)

NOT TRUE! Had a yellow Pont. 6.6/auto. WS6 bought brand new at Virg Austin Pont. oct, '78 Have seen more factory '79 Pont. 6.6 engine 4-speeds though esp. in 10th aniversary cars. Most '79 were 403 or (UGH!) 301's. Wish I had that '79 today. Rare color/engine combo. BTW, Love the cam in this vid!

Had a turquoise colored T-Top 79 with a nicely hopped up 403, aluminum intake, headers, double-pumper carb and an after market true posi-rear. Even with the 403's reputed weakness at the main bearings, this old girl was a bullet-train neck snapper on the road. Drank gas like a hippo drinking water ( about 15 mph). Traded it in for a Toyota. Wish now that I had kept it.

Awesome ride bro... I had a 78, with the 400Pontiac motor with a lot of tweaks done to it, 4 Gear (rock crusher), swapped the gears out out for 4.11's, oh and added a NOS kit to it.. Was a sweet ride... My favorite Firebird was my last, god I wish I still had that ride. 79 Forumla, WS6, 400 Pontiac, with a 4 gear (T-10), T-tops, loaded out. Very rare car. Thanks for giving me back a part of my history with cars...

Awesome Bird, I Just bought a '79 Project not to fond of the '79 front clip will put a '78 front clip on. I am Not so much going to restore as I am going to modernize a few things, I have nice zz572/620hp which will be dropped in along with a Tremec 56 6 spd when complete will have vid up.
