"March 29th 1980. The Oilers were facing the Leafs. The league was beginning to be acquainted with the exploits of a young rookie by the name of Wayne Gretzky. In his first year he was fighting Marcel Dionne for the scoring title. And on this night in Toronto he would give the world a glimpse of how dominante he was about to become." (Source: NHL Network)

Gretzky got 130 ... ( 6 months ago by freudling)
Gretzky got 130 points in 93/94. He also got 97 points in 96/97. The 90s was the dirtiest, roughest, most congested, clutch and grab hockey. The 2 line pass rule was in effect... If Alex was playing back then, he would have had to contend with all the roughness of Scott Stevens, Domi, Probert, two line passing, holding, grabbing, etc. True, hockey today is faster, but if you watch games from the late 90s the pace is close, just a lot tougher to move around back then.
FREULING is right ... ( 6 months ago by vesivialvy)
FREULING is right about the NHL in the 90's but we should never forget that Brett Hull scored i think +-500 goals goals in the 90's with a season of 87 goals in early 90's...and Mario lemieux is 2 pts per games avrg in the 90's....only to say that great players can score in any games situations and in any NHL style of play and rules...

gretzky did'nt even touch the puck on the goal at 3:52. it was a giveaway pas from behind the net. Looks like he was given assits to catch up with Marcel Dionne like Gordie Howe To Maurice Richard. This is bullshit

there was definitely a phantom assist in there- but if his linemates score on his sublime setups this could have easily been a 10 point night for gretz. he was absolutely SICK- dont care what any haters have to say. just listen to the crowd everytime he got the puck. behind the back passes, between the legs trickery...not many players pulled this stuff off in the 80s let alone today. (crosby comes to mind)

The NHL was a glorified beer league back then. The goalies routinely let in what we would today consider soft goals. Forwards don't even understand how to play defense, they pass to each others skates and they turn the puck over. They just sucked back then.

Great clip! I remember watching this game on TV too. It was really the first time I had seen a complete NHL game with Gretzky playing. Yes, there are a couple of questionable assists, but I remember Guy Lafleur getting credit with a few phantom assists during the 1970s when he was gunning for scoring titles.
