| The idea that functions will be spread accross different types of devices is unjustified. The cellphone example comes to mind: It's cheaper to build a single phone with infrared, bluetooth and 3G then to offer different models with different combinations of those functions. |

| As an industrial designer, I would like to see what he talks about really do happen but big businesses also have a say in this. One main reason why right now "convergence" is a buzz word is because it helps companies reduce cost and therefore keep more profit. If you have a product with a feature that most companies use then there probably is a large quantity of the parts which create that feature. Large quantity = reduced cost of production per part = wider profit margin. |
