Her playing on some of her numbers, like "All I Want", just blows me away. WRT Judy Collins, her highly-orchestral cover of BSN was a top-ten hit on AM radio back in, whatever, 1967? (That was back when only a few "effete snobs" listened to FM.) |

| "Rolling Stone" Top 100 guitar players, where Joni comes in at 72 and Joan Jett at 87. I think Joan Armantrading also deserves a guernsey (looks like you gotta be called Joan to play guitar). Joni gets up because she uses 30 tunings to cover for a hand weakened by polio. |

| I dont recall Collins ever had much following in Australia, but Joni is close to a goddess in folk circles. She is perhaps the eponymous singer-songwriter, even more than Dylan or Cohen, the consummate artist who is deeply uncomfortable with fame and glory, and lives in clouds at icy altitudes. She did not attend when inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I saw a great special on her life last year; at the peak of her career she went to live in the wilderness. |
