Female genital mutilation, or FGM, is a traditional practice that is performed throughout the Horn of Africa and other parts of the continent. The procedure is often called female circumcision, and it is illegal but still common in the self-declared republic of Somaliland, where health care workers, activists and others are working to end it.

This mini explanation goes out to all those who think female genital mutilation is to do with Islam: In islam, a married couple are meant to share pleasure with each other. if female circumcision was a part of islam, a husband and wife wouldnt be able to share pleasure with each other because female circumcision completely demolishes the nerves in the vagina. I'm against male circumcision too, but they don't cut off the whole penis! Man can still get sexual pleasure after it. And of course it's more painfull to cut of the whole organ than to cut off just the skin. So it's NOT exactly the same!

Please!!! FEMALE circumcision has nothing to do with ISLAM. Africans do it cos of culture. Some happen to be muslim, other are not. BUT those that do it ARE AFRICAN. IT IS PRIMARILY AN AFRICAN PRACTICE. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ISLAM. Arabs don't do this where Islam originated. Neither does the entire Indian Subcontinent.

The form of male circumcision that is usually practiced isn't even close to what these girls go through. If you wanted to compare it, cut off the head of the penis and then sew the foreskin over the cut. The clit is cut off during female circumcision and the labia are sewn together.

To compare mgm to fgm is absurd. MGM may not be nice, but it does not impare male function. FGM totally destroys a woman's ability to function in a sexually normal fashion. To compare the two is downright sexist.
