| I was in my teens in the 70's, flew several times on Air New Zealand DC-10s from Auckland to Sydney. Occasionally wonder if one of those flights was flown by the DC-10 ZK-NZP which crashed into Mt Erebus on November 28, 1979. |

| No. The L1011 was the better trijet widebody. One of the only major accidents was eastern airlines flight 401, which was only pilot error. The DC-10 has alot of mechanical errors and thus it has a very troubled history. |

| There were two versions of the DC-10....the 10 series, and the 30 series. American Airlines flight 191 was the DC-10-10, which did not come with the extra middle back landing gear. Only the 30 series had the extra gear because it was a heavier version with increased wingspan, mainly used for international flights, and the 10 was used for domestic flights. |

| They messed up on left engine maintenance, which made the engine fall off. Then, the pilot retracted the flaps, causing the plane to stall as it only had one engine (had he kept the flaps out, it could have continued flying) |
