I will be comparing the Sanyo Xacti E2 video quality to my current digital photo camera, a Canon S3 IS.
Let's see how this newly released Xacti waterproof hybrid camera (priced at around $400) compete with my Canon S3 IS (that I got a year ago for $300)
Pros
- Lightweight
- well built - does not feel cheap at all
- H.264 compression allow very small video size
- silent zooming
- Waterproof
- Can be use as a webcam
- will do 640x480 @ 60fps (perfect for slow motion)
Cons
- Terrible Image stabilization
- Focus is unreliable (therefore using manual focus is a must for macro shot)
- Even the Highest recording quality has a loss in detail
- My 1 year old Canon S3 IS performed better overall and cost me $100 less; on the other hand, S3 IS does produce enormous video file size :-)

i'm planning on ordering this, zoom and all that don't really bother me because i rarely use it, but how is the webcam feature? i'm gonna be out of the country and i'd like to use the webcam feature to talk to my girlfriend while i'm gone. thanks in advance!

Thanks! Great comparison. I especially appreciated (1) comparison of cameras under zoom and difficult lighting conditions, and (2) seeing the E2 mounted on the tripod--as this is the first evidence I have found that it was tripod mountable. I am concerned about the same trade-off: zoom and image stabilization quality versus download time. What steps are you taking to make the S5 IS download time workable?

I have the S3 IS (but S5 IS is the same compression anyway) To compress I use Vegas 7.0 with the mainconcept codec, quality is pretty good with low file size, you can download the original video file from the link in the description If youre looking for a free software, Windows Movie maker or Imovie should do the trick

Well since it's waterproof, the specs can't be good as the normal ones. though, if it was Sony or Panasonic who made this sorta things, they could've done better. Sanyo=cheap brand.
