Galmudug State is the most centrally located area in Somalia. It is equidistant from Galkacyo(State capital) by 750 km to Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Bossaso and Harar in Ethiopia. Its land area - one of the largest 16 original regions of Somalia - is 100,000 km². and it is bordered to the East by the Indian Ocean, to the West by Ethiopia, Nugal region (currently Puntland) on the North and to the South by Galgadud region. Its five ex- Districts of Mudug region; Galkacyo,Bandiradley,AF-barwaaqo, Hobyo and Harardere, with over 280 small villages have a combined population estimated at 2.500.000 that consist of several sub-clans. The state is named after(Galgadud and Mudug). The word Galmudug Literally means "Enter mudug." [1]
Creation of Galmudug:
Galmudug was established on August 14, 2006 by the clans of Sacad-Siciid-Habar gidir, Dir, Shikhal and Hillibi (Murusade) elders in Central regions of Somalia. Mohamed Warsame Ali 'Kiimiko' was elected President.[2]
History:
About 136 years ago, the famous British traveller/explore, Sir Richard Burton writes in his famous book "First Footsteps in East Africa."
"The Hawiyah are proved by its present widely scattered state; it is a powerful tribe in the Mijjarthayn country, and yet is found in the hills of Harar."[3] Showcasing that the people of Galmudug Existed. And in fact were the rulers of the land from nugaal to shabelle region before the invasion of kenadiid and his Arab army of mercenaries from Hadramut in 1878. After conquering the port town of Hobyo from the north section of the great Hawiye-Gorgarte-Dama-Hiraab Imamate, he established himself as the So-called Sultan of Hobyo/Sultanate of Hobyo.
Sihab ad-Din Ahmad bin "Abd al-Qader" writes in his famous book Futuh al-habasha ("The Conquest of Ethiopia").
"The storyteller, may God have mercy upon him, says: Then Hirabu the chieftain of the somali tribe of marraihan, Killed one of the equerries of the Sultan Umar Din when he was in nagab. The Imam heard about what hirabu had done, and he said to the sultan Umar Din. "This Somali has acted treacherously toward you and killed your equerry." So the imam, and the sultan with him, prepared himself for an expedition and set out and arrived at the country of the Somalis, as far as Kidad. Hirabu meantime had fled and was hiding in his own country.
The imam asked the sultan, "What shall we do now? I am going to send for him to hand over the horses, and to pay the blood-money. If he does so, then all is well; if he does not, then I shall go against him, while you go back to your country." So the imam sent to hirabu to hand over the horses, and to pay the blood-money to some sharifs of the family of Ba-Alawi, the husainites, May God bless us through their means.
The sharifs reached him in the region of HAWIYA where he was. He greeted them courteously, and sent back with them the horses and the blood-money." [4]
The town hirabu was hiding is located in Hawiye-Hiraab Imamate, modern-day Galmudug and is called now "Ahmed gurey".
