Well in some cases, contrary to popular belief, people pay attention and listen to "stars" that has something to say. So if a movie star, such as Charlize Theron has a positive outcome for such a thing, let it be. She's from South Africa, and I've remember her with a thick accent long ago, coming from South Africa to America, she's not just Hollywood material as you would think.

You know they can talk the talk, but come on lets walk the walk this time. I dont say you dont have point there I do agree with your comments, but more action from united nations are required now more then ever. using stars alone is not helping to solve the problem. some stars used it to gain more fame then to actually help the cause, just my opinion.

It's so funny. Up until Monster's Ball, she was playing minor roles that required nudity. Now all of a sudden she's a legitimate actress. Crazy how things can change.

Good for her. On a separate note though, I hate how she uses an American accent in every aspect of life. I understand that she needs it for movie roles, but there are plenty of foreign actors who speak with a perfect American Accent for a role, and then loose it when they are done filming. She say "she's not selling out" and "needed it to survive in the business" but after winning an Oscar, you'd think that her survival was pretty much ensured.

I don't think you know much about SA accents. It varies depending on area. My gf was bilingual (afrikaans, english) and spoke English without a Afrikaans accent. Some European interviewers think she sounds European. Check out a SA band inslowmotion here. they sing in afrikaans and english. Tell me if the singers accent is so different from charlize's accent. Don't believe the fake SA accents portrayed in movies.

Minor roles??. "Devils advocate" with Pacino, two woody allen movies. Lead role in "the astronuats wife" with Depp "the cider house rules", "the Legend of bagger vance" with Will Smith , "the Italian job". various nominations for some of those roles. She was highly respected within the industry by then. Then came "monster" NOT "monsters ball"

HAHA, yeah my bad, "monster". I had a brain fart. But I'm talking even before devil's advocate and all the rest. When I first saw her, she was doing 2 days in the valley and Reindeer Games, two of the worst flicks I had ever seen.

doxide: The UN chose Charlize Theron for this appointment for well considered reasons. You are obviously unaware of the work she does for charities her projects in SA, movies with social messages etc as she keeps a low public profile. Its your opinion WRT the movies u mention, I didn't see them. IMHO nudity is valid for a 'legitimate' actor to do if it is required for the story and reflects reality as opposed to manipulative nudity to increase revenue

1. I am aware of her charity work, I was merely remarking on how far she's come in her career. 2. Trust me, the nudity in her earlier movies was not even close to being 'necessary for the story' nor did they reflect reality. They were pretty much manipulative nudity lol. Which brings me back to my point, it's funny how some actresses make it, and others don't.

ankatz: At the time Charlize left SA all Afrikaans speakers where required to study english as second language as she says in the Ross interview. English speakers were required to study Afrikaans as second language. Charlize had a english speaking dance teacher from a young age and attended a Johannesburg arts school (mixed english afrikaans speakers). She may have spoken poor english with afrikaans accent and had to learn better grammar and pronunciation to get roles. (src Actors studio)
